Wood Packaging

About Wood Packaging

Around 95% of pallets are made from wood, including hardwood, softwood, a mixture of them both or a composite wood such as plywood. Each one of them has their unique advantages for packaging, but generally wood is inexpensive, durable and can be recycled when no longer needed. Wood is a sustainable material. As forests are cut down to produce products, more trees are planted to cope with the increased demand. It’s also an environmentally friendly material. The trees take in carbon dioxide whilst they are growing and then they require less energy during the manufacturing process.

Uses

A wooden box is a container made of wood for storage or as a shipping container. Wooden Boxes have been used from several years for storage needs. Wooden Boxes as a storage means are a best way to give protection for the objects that are being stored as these boxes can’t easily be damaged or broken. Wooden boxes are often used for heavy duty packaging when :

  • high strength is needed for heavy and difficult loads
  • long term warehousing may be needed.
  • large size is required
  • rigidity and stacking strength is critical

About Hardwood Packaging

Most wooden packaging is manufactured from hardwoods, including oak, teak and maple. This is a more expensive material, but the products are designed to last. Once they’ve been used for one journey, they’ll be reused, either by returning them to the original customer or selling them on. Hardwoods are extremely durable and less likely to give way under stress. They can, therefore, withstand much heavier loads than other materials and are also suitable for transporting fragile items that are at risk of becoming
damaged. Teak wood in particular is resistant to termites, resulting in less damage and contamination of goods.

About Softwood Packaging

Wooden pallets and crates produced from softwoods are much cheaper to buy than hardwood varieties. However, this means that they’re not built to last as long. Often they’ll only be used for one journey and then discarded and recycled. One of the main
advantages of softwood packaging products is that they’re considerably lighter than harder woods. This means that they can’t carry heavy loads, but they are easier to lift and transport. As they weigh less, they’re also cheaper for exporting goods where weight restrictions and costs apply.

Plywood Packaging

For businesses that don’t want the costs of hardwood or the limitations of softwood, plywood products might be an option. They are lightweight, making them beneficial for exports where cost is an issue. They are designed to carry fairly light loads. However, they are considerably stronger and more durable than softwood varieties, meaning they’ll last for longer and are extremely cost-effective. Due to the make-up of the material, a plywood crate or pallet will absorb less moisture than solid wood, reducing the impact on the items being transported. They offer a number of benefits to businesses in the food-processing and pharmaceutical industries, where contamination is a major concern. They’re also able to handle different extremes of temperatures, making them extremely useful for transporting fresh foods that need to be refrigerated while in transit.

Crates

A crate is a large shipping container, often made of wood, typically used to transportlarge, heavy or awkward items Wooden crates A wooden crate consists of rigid corners with planks nailed or stretched against those corners. Plank thickness varies normally between 3- and 8-mm Wooden crates are known to be one of the best materials for packaging. They are self-supporting structures that are the ideal choice for shipping various products, especially lightweight or breakable items. Wooden crates and cases are typically used to safely transport food items, fragile goods such as food jars and crockery.

Advantages

  • Wooden Boxes can be used for years as they are not easily breakable and can be used for longer times for storing different items.
  • Wooden Boxes are good to protect the thing kept inside as it doesn’t allow water to go inside, making the storage item safe inside the box.
  • Wooden Boxes are essential to store essential oils, to protect them from losing essence.
  • Wood has individual character, subtly emphasizing your objects and underlining your quality awareness.
  • Wood is a renewable, resource-friendly raw material that behaves completely CO2 -neutrally in the value-added chain and can be easily disposed of
  • Wood is used at three stages of packaging

Disadvantages

  • Untreated wood can easily become contaminated with fungi and bacteria. Treatment of wooden crates with paint or other chemicals may cause produce deterioration.
  • The material may be too hard or rough for produce like soft fruits, and therefore liners of a soft material may be needed.
  • Disposal of the crates after use.
  • Manufacturing of wooden crates puts an extra claim on the natural forest resources
